A sincere thank you to The Berry Hotel for inviting Berry Riding Club to participate. Berry Riding Club has become an institution in the Shoalhaven & Illawarra area promoting riding fun for all ages in all types of disciplines for years. Our youngest is only 18 months to our oldest hitting close to eighty!
Speaking of young riders, Berry Riding Club has begun a series of Youth Days held on the last Sunday of every month. Each Youth Day is different involving many disciplines such as Showjumping, Working Equitation, Sporting Games etc. Our most recent youth day was based on an “American Indian” theme.
There was a full day of riding ahead and it began with a warmup in our big dressage arena. It was quite a spectacular sight with so many brightly painted ponies and feathered riders! From there the children (ranging from 5 to 15 years old) split into groups and began to participate in an exciting mix of sporting events on horseback including Scudahoe, Snakes & Ladders, Double Slalom. Bareback riding (no saddle just balance!) was next and the kids loved it. After a short break for lunch, the kids and their horses got to try HORSEBALL (Google it…). It looks a bit like Harry Potter’s Quiddich on horseback! Well, the children and their horses loved that too. With our wonderful instructor Marlene teaching, kids were reaching down to pick up the “ball” off the ground while hanging off their horses like “monkeys in trees”, it was amazing! By the end of the day every child had learned new skills over and beyond just improving their riding ability. They learned to communicate, work as a team not only with their horses but with each other. At the end of the day everyone had a big smile on their face, exhausted but happy. www.berryridingclub.com
