A Chat with Mike Tomlinson on Horse Welfare, Social License and Social Media on our sport

Join us this Thursday evening (17thAugust) from 7pm when ENSW will be hosting Mike Tomlinson direct from California.

Mike was in Australia in May this year as an FEI steward and presented at the Sydney CDI Workshop. At the workshop, the statement was made that horses in sport would be like the elephants in the circus.  That when we were children, we could not imagine a circus without an elephant, and that now, we could not imagine an elephant in a circus.  Mike also concluded that people who live in a city and havenever patted a horse in their lives will determine the direction of the sportif we don’t.

Thursday’s webinar is designed tocreate more understanding about the threat and the risks to the sport we love and explore some solutions.  We will then welcome a discussion withaudience questions so please write them in the chat and we will see how many wecan cover this evening.  Register here to receive your ZOOM link – it’sfree for ENSW members. https://forms.office.com/r/R7ciAjdSya

Inaugural ENSW Members Day at SIEC

On the 29th of July the very first ENSW Members Day was held at SIEC. Over 100 riders and their horses took advantage of some beautiful winter weather and the wonderful facilities that SIEC has to offer to enjoy a day out in a non-competitive environment. Riders could choose from a ride in the Indoor arena, a trail ride on the cross-country course, a dressage protocol session or an introductory lesson on working equitation. Riders could also get their equine friends measured and many chose to enjoy a picnic lunch with their friends.

Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive and so we are looking at holding another event on the 21stOctober. Mark it in your diaries and we hope to see you there!

Horseland Narellan Junior Show Horse Championships & Clinic

The Equestrian NSW Show Horse committee ran the annual Junior weekend, kicking off with group lessons with each of our highly experienced Show Horse coaches, Les Friend and Danielle Dupre and then a brief break for a BBQ lunch. The kids had a great day learning and more importantly for them, spending time with their fellow horse loving friends.

Sunday saw beautiful weather for the Horseland Narellan sponsored Junior Show Horse Championships.

Thank you to the judges of our Junior Championships who spent time after the classes speaking with the children and explaining what judges are looking for.

Southern Highlands Carriage Driving Club Have won the Ashes!!

Last week the Southern Highlands Carriage Driving Club hosted an innovative competition where drivers competed in real-time via video in a comprehensive week of competition sponsored by Equestrian NSW. Every  size of horse was there from tall and elegant Friesians and Hackneys to Shetland ponies. The ability of the drivers to navigate some tight obstacles was very impressive. SHCDC have advised that not only was the week highly successful, but they also beat England in the competition.

Racing NSW Equimillion Competition

Racing NSW and Equestrian Australia confirmed this week that the highly-anticipated ‘Equimillion’ would go ahead over the October long weekend at Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC). This event will run over three days from September 30 to October 2, 2023 and will showcase the versatility and suitability of Thoroughbreds for careers outside of racing in the four disciplines of Dressage, Jumping, Eventing and Show Horse.

Initiated by Racing NSW, in line with their commitment to promoting equestrian sport for retired NSW racehorses, there will be 44 classes with $30,000 prizemoney per class ($1,320,000 in total),giving Junior, Amateur, and Open professional competitors alike an unprecedented opportunity to compete for significant prizemoney – even at lower levels of competition.

This event has been designed to complement other quality events run across the state and the country, which already champion the cause of off-the-track Thoroughbreds, such as the Thoroughbred Sports Horse Association (TSHA), and it is anticipated that a successful outcome will ensure it is an ongoing feature on the equestrian calendar and encourage racing bodies in other states to follow suit with similar events.

Equestrian NSW are assisting in organising this event on behalf of Racing NSW and are being financially supported to do so. Racing NSW have set the schedule for Equimillion, with the entry fee giving access to two events (including stabling) which together carry prizemoney of $60,000.

For further details on the event and to nominate for entry please visit  www.equimillion.com.au
